discrimination against fat people, when in all honesty it is a safety issue. Others have already pointed out that having very obese people in a raft makes it extremely difficult to control the raft, yet the marketing of some (all?) rafting companies is completely at odds with the spiel they give before putting on. If a very obese person is standing there threatening to sue you if you don't put them on a river, what are you going to do, tell that person (as well as all the other customers listening) that it's a dangerous pursuit and therefore lose all those customers?
It's a tough position to be in, but I think raft companies should have a set of rules and then stick by them. Know the legalities and what they're insured against, and stick by that no matter how hard someone very unfit to be in a raft presses. And this isn't just fat people, it's also people with some kinds of disabilities (such as heart problems.)
Oh, and I used to be able to do pushups, but not since I separated my shoulder, or not very many. Then again, I'm not a raft guide or a customer either, so what do I know? |
