Its over 3 hours away, but there are a couple of options in that area.
The Coosa in Wetumpka will most likely be your closest option. I'm not familiar with the Western side of the state, so maybe there is something over there. Its a lot of flatwater, a couple small rapids and Moccasin Gap, which has some good play.
In Tallapoosa in Tallassee is a short run, but has a solid IV/V (depending on where you run it and the level) rapid. Its a nasty, sieved out riverbed, but still fun. However its hard to catch it with water. If you drive the 3.5 hours and end up missing the release, its going to be the most hideous display of ELF boating.
Theres also some stuff in Georgia, and the Hooch through Columbus has some good play, but I've never been there.
Of course, there is the beach. Although I imagine it is small surf, surfing a kayak in small waves is a lot more fun than a surf board on small waves.
I don't know of any Kayaking clubs in Mobile, but I didn't live there. Check out Alabamawhitewater.com for some runs. I'm sure theres some other stuff within a "reasonable" distance. Of course, with gas approaching $4.00, I don't know how far can be considered reasonable anymore. |
