question Where to live in the Southeast? New

My fiance and I may be moving to the southeast next year.  We're not sure where we will end up, but my top priority is to be near high quality H-2-O.  Places under consideration are:

1) Charlottesville, VA
2) Winston-Salem, NC
3) Knoxville, TN
4) Huntington, WV
5) Raleigh-Durham, NC

Besides good boating, we're really hoping for nearby access to hiking/camping, road & mtn. biking, lakes, nice Appalachian views.  I hear there might even be skiing once in a while down there.  And of course, affordable housing and a good mechanical engineering job market are also important considerations.

If you are familiar with these places, or places w/in an easy commute, we would be most appreciative to hear your thoughts and suggestions.   What are the best rivers/creeks?  Which places are more affordable?  Which have fun night-life - good food, music, community events?  Which are more rural?  Which have good jobs or not?  What are some things to look out for?  Which might be polluted from mining, agriculture, or industry?

I'm very excited at the prospect of moving to the SE.  Thanks in advance for any information and advice!

Will
