chaos makes me fail the spit-test at that level.

One good thing to know about it is that someone strung a rope down into the right side to make self-rescue possible for a swimmer or paddler who gets pushed right.  The bad thing is that if you get pushed right, your chances of needing to use it are incredibly high... and unless you make the move to the left at the top, the right side is where you're going.

Chaos, for those of you unfamiliar, is a nasty drop where the outflow from the pool below Spirit drops off of a ledge, and the hydraulic at the base is backed up by the canyon wall- the resulting boil will either evict the paddler left and to freedom, feed the unfortunate straight back into the downflow, or right and into a dead-end pocket that will feed you continuously into it's own downflow.  Even on a very, very good day, after I'd eaten my wheaties and a corn dog for good measure, I'd give myself very low odds of being able to paddle out of the right side.

I'd also say that whoever conducted a successful rescue in there was either ridiculously good or damned lucky or both.  David, you've got good buddies, buy them extra beers.  Glad you made it out okay.
