I am also contemplating a trip to NZ sometime in winter 2008 (their summer).  I have a cousin who lives in Auckland (north) and was going to make it a multi-purpose trip (visit with cousin and kayak - class 3ish+).  I've never been there.  What time of year were you planning to go?  Maybe we could hook up for part.
