question history of extreme races? New

I'm just curious about some of the earliest extreme races - did most just fade away or are they still happening on a very grassroots level?
I organised the first ever race on Canyon Creek in Washington many moons ago.  This was in direct response to a dam threat on the creek.  The dam never happened and to the best of my knowledge the race still does.
Might be a cool idea to trace back the origins of extreme races to see where we were and how far we've come.
