or even if you aren't ready for that I'd say when you are just getting annihilated in a hole or crease and you want to save something for the swim or you and stuck on something like a tree or sieve or undercut and you aren't moving... I think it is situational but you should consider the consequences regardless ...included in these consequences are drinking a bootie, injury and/or death...if you swim or not...hold on the bootie if you don't swim.  

Almost always sticking it out is the best option but there are definitely times to get out immediately.
