His boat was recovered at the time of the accident. I do not know if his paddle was recovered.

"Could he have missed his roll due to gear failure?"

There was no indication of any failure in his outfitting or gear.

"I am curious as well to what direction they tried to rope his body off the log from.  Where they trying to pull him back up stream or lift up/over the log?"

As far as I know the rope was played from the rock upstream and to river right of the pin spot. I do not recall exactly how his body was finally freed. They told me, but I just don't remember. There was a lot happening right then when I went out there with them. I can ask. Maybe one of them will see this thread and weigh in.
