They were asked about pushing their sport, and at what point are these ramps becoming too big and too dangerous. They replied by saying its a natural progression of the sport, and while it is dangerous, we can never remove danger from our lives.
I think the same goes for boating. Even without the outside influences (videos) it is completely natural for one to want to push their limits. Even people like you (and I for that matter) that mainly stick to easier rivers, do you not also "spice it up" a little with harder moves, catching eddies and challenging yourself?
BTW, that write up was very humbeling, and I don't think your post was inappropriate.
