You are quite right, defective boats are crap, but hey, boats break, i have (in 10 years) seen very few break on low volume runs, most get more damaged in transit!

If one does break every few years, that sux, but in my experience it is rare (read, cock your line up and boof/piton 10ft onto rock..). Kayaks are expensive...but the sport is still more affordable than many others (get into trad climbing for example!, even flyfishing gets pricey).
