We have a lot of potential around where I live. We have an old low head dam (2-3 feet) with 1/4 mile of Class 2 rapids behind it. About another 1/4 mile the river drops over 12-15ft waterfall and then there's more rapids for about 200 feet. The low head dam could be modified into a more friendly feature. Right now at high water, it traps trees in it for days. The only downside is that I believe this is where the treatment plant drops it's water. By state standards, the water that comes out of these palce must be Class B or better, which is swimming/bathing grade. Still...
We also have a 600+ acre reservoir that has an aquaduct piping water from it down to the city 600-800 feet below. The water is then diverted into a power station. There use to be another reservoir between the power station and the other one, but it got washed out in the 40's. The state is considering revitalizing the reservoir for recreation purposes. Maybe a "whitewater park" reservoir is in order? |
