'The Olympics are scheduled to begin in 2010 in the most beautiful place on earth. Squamish. Every year I travel with thousands of other tourists to the area to explore the rivers and mountains the area has to offer. I travel this far from the southeastern United States, bypassing all of the lower Rockies here in the States. Places like Colorado, Idaho, Montana, even California and Washington. I won't have too for long though. Before too long the Squamish Valley will only be a recreational relic with Independent power projects destroying the landscape and damming up the beautiful rivers in the area, the Squamish area will no longer be a world kayaking destination. It will no longer be able to claim itself as âthe recreational capital of the worldâ. Rivers such as the Ashlu, Callaghan Creek, and Rogers Creek will be dammed and the energy will be sold by private utility companies and enter the United States power grid. Local economies will only see short term income as the construction projects destroy the wilderness and construct huge penstock tunnels, forever scaring the rugged BC wilderness. The Canadian people will see no long term benefits, only long term loss of natural resources and loss of dollars from the growing eco-tourism industry. Please help discourage the damming of the rivers in the Sea-to-sky Corridor. Please block Ledcorâs attempts to gain zoning rights and ownership over natural resources that clearly belong to the Canadian people. Giving water rights to Independent companies, such as Ledcor, set a dangerous precedent and opens up all areas in BC to abuse by private industry. The fact is that Ledcor, and only Ledcor stands to profit from this project. If Squamish continues to claim itself as âthe outdoor recreational capital of the worldâ the local government and citizens must act now to protect its most valuable resources and ultimately, itâs livelihood.
