Running rivers well within your ability that you don't know without a guide is my #1 suggestion for improving your abilities after you've got one hard run dialed.
If you can nail everything on Green at any level, but haven't ventured out much, you've got line-skills. Now you can either follow on hard stuff for years, hoping to learn from others when the 'shit goes down' or branch out and develop river running skills elsewhere.
Finding lines for yourself teaches you what flows and what hurts much faster! Also to do the homework: map reading, time assesment, what to carry when dark hits, and to be in charge of your own destiny.
We did Raven's 'on sight' and it was awesome! Followed on Hp and Tox, happily. But if you've got the time, progress with your 'crew' river to river rather than get dragged down all the stuff in your area.
You only get one chance to 'on sight' a river . . take advantage of it whenever possible even if it's not the top of your ability. You'll be more of an asset to the group back on 'the shit' when your guide walks out or doesn't show. And be able to travel the world using maps instead of having to find guides.
Following lines takes one set of skills, and you'll see things faster. But you can miss developing the ability to go anywhere you want when you want. And you'll have to travel to find that 'on sight' skill once you're looking for it.
