whats up Mark, as you probably remember, I had surgery related to 2 dislocations in the same day. I struggled with the same decision and put it off until my insurance was going to lapse, which was at the end of summer. After the dislocation, ER, splint, being out for 2 weeks or so, I went on to kayak that summer and kayak more technical rivers than before I had dislocated the sholder. The shoulder was feeling great, plenty strong, and no limitations. But here are some things I remember.

Physicians usually don't recommend surgery after the first dislocation, cant remember the reason, maybe its more based on the MRI and damage done. Mine was recommended because I had clipped part of the head of the humerous and it was floating around in there.

The more you dislocate, the easier it becomes for it to dislocate again. You are always doing some type of damage when you partially or fully dislocate it. I was told that the damage can get to a point when it is beyond fixing. They can go in and repain tendons, liagments, the capsule, and so on but it will never be as stong as it could have been if it was taken care of earlier.

Post op. The operated shoulder feels stronger than the other shoulder. I have lost very limited range of motion in that shoulder. It is something that will never limit my abilities. The days after were miserable, PT was long but generally not painful. You do lose all your strength but it comes back.

I'm sure there was more but I can't think of it now. Its been a long day already. Hope this helps.

Cheers
Sid
