Squeeze into the smallest boat you can.

Once your boat is verical...

Try to lay back into the water & let the water support your body weight.
If you lean forward, it will pull the bow towards your head(& may make you fall over backwards).
If you lean back, it will push the bow away from you.
I like to keep my paddle horizontal and brace on whichever side is necessary.
Others say to keep a vertical paddle, so that you can more easily transition into the next move.

I find handpaddles a little easier to deal with. You can brace on both sides at once & make corrections on both sides at once.
