note Definitely did not mean to hate on the scouts...

I run a youth outing club, too, and I very much respect the parents who give their time and effort to scouting. I have many friends and know many youngsters who've had great experiences with the scouts. Believe me, I understand the difficulties involved in trying to recruit adults to help with outings. It's not easy for them, and the reluctance is usually not laziness or apathy: it's just plain hard to commit to weekends away when you have a family.
It seems, though, that as outdoor recreation and wilderness medicine have become more standardized over the past decade or so, the scouts haven't kept pace. There are so many resources available for becoming a good and competent outdoor leader today, I wonder if the scouts could provide a bit more uniform training in wilderness medicine and leadership without imposing too much on their volunteers?
At any rate, I'm working to build a solution, not tear down the boy scouts, so I'm sorry if my post came across as anti-scout.
