I was gungho about kayaking the canyon. Ended up in a dagger honcho which didn't fit me well, didn't carry speed, and was a pain to roll. Avoid all 3 characteristics in a kayak on the canyon. Coming from the SE, the water is pushy, swirling, and truthfully a little annoying. After a half day of rolling 3-4 times through each wavetrain or alternatively fitting huge eddy swirls on the side of the meat or in the rapid runout AND looking at my buddies casually floating on the raft with beer in hand, I lassoed the honcho on the raft for the rest of trip.
If I go back, I will take a greenboat or remix or some long boat to punch through the meaty wavetrains and skim over the annoying eddy lines.
that's my opinion of it...the big highlight of the trip is the scenery, side canyons, etc. honestly, coming from the SE, I was intimidated by how big and pushy the water was, so be warned. Above all else be sure you have a comfortable boat.
