I was there at that time, too

That was what made it so strange. He'd rail against it one minute and do it the next. It's very typical of what we call the "Kuthe Rules" here. He is loathe to let anyone else tell him what to do but quick to insist that everyone else conform to his "code of ethics".

His rules fall into several broad categories and penalties for infractions are severe. One area where he considers himself supreme is the web. At one point he was blasting newcomers on our board for minor infractions of what he called "netiquette", like making the minor mistake of posting in all capital letters. He (rightly) calls it shouting, but rather than a gentle nudge pointing them in the right direction they got both barrels right between the eyes. Many of them were never heard from again.

Another example of a "Kuthe Rule" is that if you give him a ride to the river and stop for food you must stop at a sit-down restraunt with real (not plastic) tableware. Anything else is "fast food" and that is a violation of the "Kuthe Rules". IOW, "Hardee's" is unacceptable because they use plastic tableware, "Steak and Shake" is not because they use metal tableware.

Another "Kuthe Rule" that I have come up against is that he insists upon driving in the far left lane of any highway. He claims that the traffic is lighter there and, since he always exceeds the speed limit anyway, he might as well just stay in the left lane so he doesn't have to change lanes as often. I'll admit that he has a good point there, but I think the real issue is that he knows that he's supposed to "keep right excet to pass" and that amounts to "telling him what to do" and that is the biggest no-no of all.

There are many many more and have provided many hours of mirth and merriment around the campfire discussing the incongruency of the "arch anarchist" making rules for everyone else to live by. It's one of the things that makes John Kuthe "John Kuthe".
