Picked up my new medium Burn last Thursday night. First, I must confess that of the dozen or so boats Ive bought over the years this is the first time Ive dropped cash without demoing or even sitting in the boat. Not sure if I was being lazy or impatient. I was real close to buying an H3 a few years ago, but some features of the boat made me hold off. So when the Burn came out I was pretty confident the boat wouldnt disappoint me in the water.
Before I describe my issue with the Burn Ill give a little info on myself Im 61 185lbs and have been paddling an old WS Y for the last several years. On Friday afternoon I dropped my Burn into the water at Sang Run for a trip down the Upper Yough. Lets just say I was EXTREMELY pleased with how the boat paddled. Leland was was spot-on with his review at brushymountianpublishing dot com so go there for a thorough review of the Burn.
Okay, so whats my problem? The first time I sat in boat was Thursday night while wearing street clothes. My initial thought was Oh Crap! With the factory Pyranha hip pads installed the fit in the seat area was EXTREMELY tight. A little more info on me I have a 33 waist with an average sized butt so don't accuse me of being too large for the boat. My next thought was Id be fine in paddling shorts with the factory hip pads removed. Sadly, I was hoping that buying a new boat with the latest outfitting would save me hours of gluing and fitting minicell for the custom fit I was accustomed to in my Y. Next I tried sitting in the Burn with the hip pads removed and wearing neoprene paddling shorts. The overall fit in the seat was okay (but very snug) with my legs straight ahead, but when I put my knees under the thigh hooks the seat is way too tight at my leg/hip region. More specifically the forward sides of the seat arent formed to allow your legs to be spread apart. I sat in the large Burn at the cheat fest and was disappointed when I found it uses the same exact seat as the med. I suspect this will become a bigger issue as more of the large sized crowd gets into the Burn. Bottom line is I love how the Burn paddles, but the boat is going up for sale if I cant get a fix for the seat. |
