The Aussie open will be this week. I have been here since the 8th, meaning I missed the wairoa extreme race for the first time in 10 years. But not to worry, the training is going really good here, and the course configuration is really sweet! I came in pretty under prepared for selection, and had the worst set of races for the place in the team ever. It was pretty dodgy racing for me. I wasn't super phyc'd for the racing in Kawerau, and after the second day of racing was cancelled it was all going to come down to the racing at Mangahoe. The northern island of NZ has just been hammered by an intense storm causing chaos across the island. Roads were closed, rivers turned into raging torrents, cliffs slid down, and tree were ripped from the ground. The last weekend hosted the"Andy Duff Memorial Race" on the Kaituna River in Rotorua. This is a battle of epic proportions, with a bit of skill but a whole lot of luck involved. Yesterday was an epic. With the Arateitia Dam getting some work done, the entire generation flow has been diverted down the river bed, making something that gets your heart pumping. The first ever 2010 Up and Comers camp was held on the Kaituna River in New Zealand. The camp's goal was to get youngster up and coming kayakers to learn skills ranging from extreme racing till river swimming and kayak safety.
