A North Carolina United Methodist pastor understands this and began bringing church to the Nantahala River for those who prefer a Sunday morning canoe to a church pew. The Rev. Wayne Dickert is a former U.S. Olympic paddler turned pastor. Dickert feels outdoors people often feel like outsiders in a traditional church. Bringing church to the river lets church happen in a comfortable setting. “This is the perfect marriage of worship and recreation and re-creation and having that opportunity to have new life breathed into them,” says Dickert.
