If there was ever a person whose entire destiny became saving rivers, it might be Matt Terry. The founder of Ecuadorian Rivers Institute (ERI), Matt has dedicated the past 15 years to promoting environmental awareness in Ecuadora country that struggles to balance the future with putting bread on the table today.

Sometime
in your paddling, you get the bug. The bug to paddle new rivers in new
places rivers with rapids you have never seen, with put-ins and
take-outs you don't know. The bug to paddle in countries you have only
dreamed of visiting, where the people speak a language unfamiliar, who
eat different food than you do, where the fruit is fresh off the tree
and dinner is served at a different hour than at home. The bug to take a
vacation where the centerpiece is paddling for multiple days rather
than a weekend here or there. So where to go? Where to kayak? How do
you maximize your coveted vacation time and do the most
paddling/exploring/relaxing/fun you can?
I
recently had my first swim
in nearly 15 months. My last swim was on the Middle
Fork of the Salmon at high
water. My most recent swim was much less exciting.
The Pacuare River of Costa Rica will host more 35 countries this month for the 2011 World Rafting Championships.
It's October, which means in the cold weather is creeping into the

Kayaking with an international event coming to the Nantahala River in
2013.
It Must Be the Boat
Here you've been paddling all summer in your play boat: making the moves, acing the ferries, looking like a rock star. You can paddle just about anything in your play boat. And then comes a day when you want to get off Class III-IV rivers, maybe run some creeks, catch some gnarr--just like the big guns in the videos. Of course, if the videos are any clue- the big guns use creek boats. So you decide it is time for a river runner and /or a creek boat. Think you can control it the same way as a play boat?
