World’s First Summer School for Kayakers
When I speak with parents and students about New River Academys college prep semester programs I often hear the following responses: I would love to go, but I play soccer during the school year., Does the school do anything during the summer?, Uggh, Hes got that darn girlfriend, I wish he would just go with you., I dont think her mother and I are ready to let her go for a full school year. I have wanted to develop a summer school program for several years, and it was the parents continual requests for this program that inspired Huge Experiences to develop an accredited summer school tour.

After taking the spring semester off to compete in Australia at the World Freestyle Championships, where he came in fifth and his pupil Todd Baker placed third in the Junior Class, he has been training in West Virginia with David Hughes, the founder of Huge Experiences. David's accomplished record as a coach is highly respected in the kayak world and is an asset to Bryan as they work together on training techniques and methods. "Bryan's performance in Costa Rica was outstanding and we are confident that he will expand on that experience and be the best Head Freestyle coach he can be," said David.

2005 National Paddling Film Festival Update
The past few years you have seen some big changes with the NPFF. But one thing has not changed, our commitment to river conservation. Last year the NPFF donated its proceeds to American Whitewater, American Canoe Association, Chattooga Conservancy and West Virginia Rivers Coalition. This year we are looking to include Chris Spelius support of Futa Friends for the Futaleufu River, Chili and Rivers Foundation and their work on the Magpie river in Northern Quebec. In fact, we are expecting a film about the Magpie! The film follows a group of 20 paddlers, which includes such notables as Steve Fisher, Tyler Curtis, Brendan Mark and the Hitchins brothers down the Magpie river.

*** New BoaterTalk Features ***
We've got some new features for you at BoaterTalk. Here is a rundown of what is now available.

Natasha Peterson - Something in the Air
There must be something in the air here in Turrialba. The smells are understandably more pungent than the dry air of the United States but there seems to be something more permeating, more altering...

Kangaroos, aborigines, Crocodile Dundee...
Kangaroos, aborigines, Crocodile Dundee, vegemite sandwiches and dust are a few images that come to mind when thinking about Australia. Indeed, Australia is amazing; theres unspoiled wilderness, diverse landscapes, exotic wildlife, exotic people, and exotic food. Travelers from all over the world visit intent on experiencing the aboriginal lifestyle, see demonstrations of didgeridoo music and boomerang throwing, to take a bush walk through one of the 500 wilderness parks, and to breath deeply the reddish orange, you guessed it, dust.

The Gore Canyon 2004 event included the Whitewater Cup (US National Rafting Championships) and the Traditional Downriver Race. The event was well-supported, with many more competitors than 2003. OR Report: Fluid
The Fluid Flirt is finally available in all three sizes. The large just became available. This completes the line of Fluid's playboats. They are also about to go into production with their Solo like of creekboats. They will be producing a large and small version. They will also have a hatch option. Their chamber will not be the standard bulkhead type chamber, but actually be a drybag. That will prevent leaking at the bulkhead over time, and will also allow you to put gear behind your seat if the bag is not being used.

OR Report: Teva Party
Craziness... total and complete.

OR Report: IR Big Gun Show
Here I am at the IRBGS party at Brewvies in SLC. It was an impressive show this year. Seems like most of the really impressive footage was from YGP. Do you think that's luck? Probably not. I'll be working with the LVM guys to get you video from the Big Gun Show along with possibly some interviews tomorrow.

OR Report: Riot
First thing I want to say is that I talked to Jeff about the plastic problems of the past with Riot. This is what has kept me out of a Sniper. I've heard to too many boats breaking. I've never had it happen myself with my two Riot boats, but I know it does. Jeff said that they switched to a more standard plastic like everyone else uses. No more Xytec. As a result, breakages are WAY down. Fischer had evidently broken a large number of boats last year, but none so far with the new plastic. I'm sure the rest of you are as happy to hear that as Riot is.

OR Report: Wavesport
Confluence Watersports whitewater brand Wavesport seems to be in the well and able hands of Field Marketing Manager Jimmy Blakeney. Eric and I spent some time with Jimmy at the Wavesport booth and got Jimmys take on the new boats.

OR Report: Astral
Astral has eliminated PVC from all their vests in order to be more environmentally friendly. They've even gone so far as to create two new vests (for men and women,) which contain recycleable foam in the back, and natural, sustainable, grown floatation in the front. They have a pricepoint vest ($89) and a vest with a simplified Z strap system.

OR Report: Teva and Kavu
One of the great things about the annual Summer OR show is having the opportunity to meet and spend time with some of our industries most forward thinking marketing people. Thursday we were pretty psyched to sit down with Jodi Barr of Kavu as well as Adam Druckman of Teva.

OR Report: My car wants to die
On Wednesday, on my way to OR, my car decided that it wanted to die. Not die peacefully, mind you. It wanted to go up in a ball of carnage. This is the famous Saab. Yes, I should know better. I've been reminded of this by Mark... numberous times.

Paddle China!
Chengdu, the capital of western Sichuan, is like Denver in 1950 - no one has explored the rivers in the nearby mountain range. The opportunity for wild boating is unsurpassed - the Hengduan mountains are higher and steeper and there are far more rivers in them than there are in the Rockies. Plus, this area is largely inhabited by Tibetans, so the cultural experience is mind boggling.

Day Two: I am officially afraid of David
All he talks about are axes. He walks around looking at the axe catalog. His wife is admiring the axes (I think so he doesn't get mad.) Then there is this.
If you don't get any more reports from me, call for help.

More on day one: I need a thesaurus and a dictionary.
OK, so my writing style leaves a bit to be desired. I'm not David Weber. As a side note, would you feel comfortable with two David Webers running around this planet? I rest my case.

First day at OR. They need a wireless network access point
The first day was a pretty good one, but I had no way to put up any new photos without leaving the show. That's too bad. I'm going to suggest that for next year they set up a wireless access point so we can get online with our laptops. Now to the meat. More details inside.

Trekking out to OR
The yearly pilgrimage to OR goes exactly as it usually does. Driving north through Colorado, I take I-80 (the place where retreads go to die) out to SLC. I roll into town, top down, blaring Wagner on my stereo. Morman children scatter. It's as if they have never seen a man in Viking drag before... But I digress...

BoaterTalk has gauges
I've been sitting on the code for a year or two. I've held off because I've offered to partner with two different groups to do gauges on BT in a mutually beneficial way. I like to share within the community when possible so a) I don't have to reinvent the wheel, and b) I can help out other people. Neither of my offers were accepted, so here you go.

Kayak Magazine Resurrected
The whitewater-only magazine that started it all is back. After a few fun, irreverent and spelling-error-prone issues in 1999 and 2000 Kayak magazine disappeared. It was purchased in 2002 by the publishers of Paddler magazine and is now being published twice yearly.

BoaterTalk Pledge Drive
As you know by now, BoaterTalk is launching a membership drive. Questions are being asked whether BT is going to "pay-per-view" or "pay-per-post". Instead of this, we are encouraging broad-based membership at very low prices. We are encouraging as many memberships as possible to support continuing development. Though membership is not required for occasional visitors, we need the support of our regulars. There is a link at the bottom of the membership page that will take occasional visitors to BoaterTalk as usual.

Offtopic Posts
This is a sensitive time, not only in the US and Iraq, but in the world. Discussion can get out of hand quickly with the emotions these things stir. I'm not going to stop offtopics. I'm working on a way to tag them so they can be filtered, but I'm not going to stop them. One thing I am going to do from now on though is nuke personal attack posts as soon as I see them. No explaination given other than this one. We can discuss offtopic stuff, but lets just keep it to a minimum and civil.
